First I would like to thank Sarah of Toasts and Tables for including SocialDesign on this important day of raising awareness in the blogosphere. If you are a blog fan you will notice today that many of your daily reads will be posting pink! October 1st marks the start of breast cancer awareness month. A few weeks ago I just heard story of a 24 year old girl who thought she should get checked and found out she had stage 4 breast cancer! So you are never too young and it's never too early to be checked. Your friends and family will thank you.

In regards to the pics, they are all from good old brides.com and theknot. Good old stand by's when you forgot to find a bunch of pink pics and remembered at the last minute.

Spread the word and do yourself some good and make an appointment to get checked!

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Yes, it's almost Halloween, the most joyous fabulous fun time all year. I don't think I can express how much we love Halloween and how much time we spend talking about Halloween. Here is why: Halloween is an event designer's dream come true. Totally over the top, no limits, complete with costumes! There are so many ways to work with Halloween in interesting and unexpected ways. If you feel even 1/8th as excited as we are, you MUST immediately go purchase Martha Stewart's Halloween Holiday edition of her mag. It is to die for. I almost bought a scanner just so I could show you all the fabulousness. Be prepared for plenty of Halloween posts in the upcoming month. Here are some pics to hold you over.

Real Weddings- Lisa and Andy

This one's for you Box! So this is wedding of a very good friend of mine. We both got engaged at a very similar time and shared so much of our wedding planning together. It was so exciting for me to see it all come together for her. This is one of those great high school romance stories. The couple has been together for years and years.

I loved so much of this event. Gorgeous Philadelphia city location, but they kept it personal by using a beach theme, which is where the couple got engaged. Neutral colors with pops of orange and an amazing bridal gown. The suits on the men were one of the highlights for me. And how great is that cake? Congrats Lisa and Andy! We came across this Event Designer and loved his work. We were on the hunt for Halloween ideas (our ab fave holiday!) and found his site. He's worked for Chanel and the likes for corporate events but has also produced some amazing private events as well. Here are some of our favorite images. Take a look at Ron Wendt. We love his use of lighting (of course!) and his great use of color. That tone on tone blue event is to die for!

Hi fab readers. I was reading my Glamour mag last night and came across an article I wanted to share. Since we've entered this crazy world of blogging we've had some great experiences meeting all different kinds of cool people. We've also been surprised at the level of harsh words that can come through when you have the animosity of a computer between two people. For us and all the other wonderful people out there who take the time to create blogs with their ideas for readers, take a look at this article. 3 Cheers to Glamour for including it! The Internet is an emboldening, alternate reality—but it’s still reality. We need to apply our general rules of morality and civility to our interactions on the Web. I’m not advocating a pinky-in-the-air level of politeness, but Web users should stand behind what they say. I suggest this test: If you wouldn’t speak something to someone’s face, or sign your name to an angry rant, then don’t post it online. No more hiding behind the keyboard.
I never thought I’d say this, but the unmitigated and unintelligent nastiness has to end—on MySpace, over e-mail, on blogs and everywhere else. As soon as we realize that there’s a very real person on the other side of that LCD glow, maybe we can all start acting a little more human.

Color Color Color

We get a lot of questions about color. How to choose colors for an event, what colors work in our venue, what are the best colors for our season....etc.

I found this great article on color in home design and felt that it really translated well to working with color for your event. I'm posting the highlights and you can view the full article at Apartment Therapy. Take all of this with a grain of salt. Remember there are NO rules.

Warm colors are stimulating
The reds, oranges, yellows and all the off whites that tend to this direction possess all the qualities of warmth in that they are hot, stimulating and soothing to our emotions, which crave warmth. This is the reason red is the most successful color in our consumer society and found in such icons as Coca-Cola, Ferrari, and red lipstick.
Warm colors are therefore best in social rooms of your house, such as the living room, dining room and kitchen. (SD: Do you want a social, party with an exciting band? Go for these colors)

Cool colors are calming
The blue side of the spectrum along with cool browns and grays and the cool off whites possess all of the qualities of coolness in their ability to calm our emotions and focus our thoughts. While our heart may crave warmth, our head and our thoughts crave coolness in order to its best work. This is why the cool blues are the most popular color for men’s business suits and shirts, as well as police uniforms, why the old time bank teller wore a green visor, and why the Yankees are considered gentlemen in their blue pinstripes, whereas the Red Sox are emotional barbarians (not this year).
Cool colors are therefore best in the rooms where concentration and calmness are most important, such as the bedroom, office, and nursery

The 80/20 rule
Then use strong color sparingly to punctuate the room, not define it. I recommend 80% neutral colors and 20% strong colors. Just like a woman’s face is made up with bright lipstick in a small portion of her face and neutral colors in the rest, so should a room be balanced. For example, in a warm living room such as Mike’s, I would recommend off white walls (warm/neutral) to go with his rich, brown couches (warm/neutral) and then a deep red rug (warm/color) and colorful table lamps in either black, silver or reds to wake up the room. Small batches of color have a tremendous effect on the whole and will “wake up” and bring out the more neutral colors around them. (SD note: This is when you hear people talk about having "pops" of color. This is great if you're using white linens)

OK, we need to discuss this and I need feedback. Kohl's. Yes, Kohl's. I have recently been inundated with blog posts, mag articles, ads, etc in my face about Vera Wang at Kohl's. Part of me wants to be like, "ok, affordable, cute, stylish...done." The other part is like "Ok, Vera, we get it, bedding, dishes, lingerie, bags, and oh yeah, Bridal Gowns!" I do feel like she's selling her name everywhere on earth. But I have to say, some of this stuff is cute. But I have a bad impression of Kohl's in my head. Has anyone seen this stuff in person? What do you think of it. If you all love it, I will check it out immediately. Thanks!

Check this site out. I love home design just as much as event design. They are obviously pretty similar. So I'm picky about design/color, etc. This site allows you to completely customize bedding from fabric to color to pattern and it's very very detailed. You can pick colors of teeny tiny petals as well as the base fabric color. Best part is the price is totally reasonable! You have to go play around with it. I am bookmarking this for my house!

Zara is such a great store. It has all the Europe flair of an H&M without being watered down. If you have a Zara near you, you are lucky. Zara has just added a home store. However us Americans are not that lucky yet. I'm crossing my fingers for one soon though! Write them emails and tell them we neeeeed them over here. Especially in Philadelphia! Anyway, check out some great layouts from the catalogue. Their affordability has crossed over into home design and therefor their accessories are affordable for events! Love them.

I saw these guys on Outblush yesterday. I love anything LED because so many events these days have venues that prevent the use of an open flame. These are cool because they don't look like little robot candles. They are made of real wax and the coolest part is you can switch them to blue if you like! How cool with it be to have lots of these on regular setting and then late night switch them all to blue. Also, they turn off if you blow on them! Check them out here

We love food. We really love food a lot. We especially love food that is also in cute packaging. The ladies over at Pinko were gracious enough to send us some of their famous cookies. They came packaged so cute with pink confetti in pretty little boxes. We opened them up to taste some of the most delicious cookies ever. They were air tight sealed and survived quite some time at Fed Ex since I lost my license (long story). Since we got them the staff has been going nuts for them! An added bonus: Pinko donates portions of all sales to charity. Can't get much better than that. I would think this would be so sweet to send to bridesmaids to ask them to be a part of your wedding. Or to have as favors on guests plates maybe at a rehearsal dinner. Or so nice in a pile before guests hit the road to take with them. Check them out!

Well this holiday weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. It's sad to think that days at the beach and tank tops will be faded memories of weeks past. But alas, Autumn is around the corner and we may as well embrace it, after all it is a pretty fantastic time of year. Time for great jackets, blouses, and high boots and other beautiful things...like parties!! We absolutely adore fall events. And although each affair is different and tailored to each couples unique style, we can't help but swoon over the beautiful imagery and inspiration that naturally comes from our Mid-Atlantic milieu. Fall, autumn, whatever you want to call it...make sure to take advantage of the beautiful colors, gorgeous landscapes and crisp weather. And maybe, just maybe your senses will be aroused enough to go for an autumn event. We sure hope so!

By far the best bridal magazine out there. They know it too since they charge almost a mortgage payment for it. Ok, exaggerating, but it's up there. Grace Ormonde is known for it's wonderful unique and over the top style. So fun to look at. Here are some great images from the issue. Which is your fave? I'm dying for this last black and white one. Anemone is one of my favorite blooms.

That is the song I sing when I find a site that I really love love love. Graham and Green is such a site. Everything from the furniture, to the chachkies, to the lighting and decor is so fab I'm dying. I am so inspired by this site not only for events but also for my home. I am seeing these hanging, surrounding an alter. I'm also seeing it surrounding a dancefloor. These are so delicate and stunning! With light shining through they would be incredible. It's almost like hanging a very open lace fabric. They can divide a room to make private lounging sections or highlight certain areas like a head table. There is so much possibility with these. Designer's Secret Resource

Most people in the design world know about this source for cheap and good design finds. Pearl River is a mecca for affordable ways to make an impact. Most people think, Asian store, all I'm going to get is lanterns and chinese takeout boxes. Yes they have that. But they also have amazing ceramic dishes, beautiful bamboo aisle runners, parasols for pictures, chargers, placemats, screens and so much more. And the best part is how affordable everything is...like 2 dollar affordable! My suggestion is to visit the site and really think outside of the box. Here is a sampling of some of my favorites.

Lyndsi and I have a special place in our hearts for butterfly weddings. This theme was that of one of our very first events. We loved the natural flowy look. Not to mention we got to work with the coolest couple and it could not have been more successful. This image comes from martha...thanks Faye and Greer for the link to the big pic site! (bloggers dream) I thought this was such a cheap and easy idea. You can purchase those butterflies at any craft store and the chinese lanterns wholesale online. Love it.

What do I need an Event Designer for? Isn't that why I have a florist?

We feel it's important that we take the time to educate and inform on event design. The more we work with clients and meet the wonderful couples we are lucky to know, the more we realize that people just don't understand what Event Designers really do and why it's a value.

Open up a Martha Stewart, You may see pictures like this:

This is the work of Rebecca Thus, a well respected Event Designer. Note the details and how everything seems to tie together. That is event design. An ED will create an overall concept for your event at the start of planning and should ensure that every visual detail works as a cohesive whole. This may include partnering with your florist and lighting specialist, or using one in house. Florists do flowers and can do some structural work depending on the florist. Event Designers, design events from top to bottom. So now you're may thinking, but I can do that myself. And you're right, you probably could. But the couples who hire ED's are very interested in creating a stunning and unique event. You're not hiring someone to go buy vases and tie bows. You're hiring a creative team for their brains. The same reason why artists can sell a painting for thousands of dollars. You aren't paying for the oil paint and canvas (bows and boxes), you're paying for the creativity that maybe you didn't have.

These pictures above are the work of RJ Balthazar, another event design firm. They happen to also do florals as well. You can see the creative touches though that go well beyond just flowers.

Clients who end up working well with event designers are those who value something different. A good event designer won't simply recreate what you saw in a magazine. They will instead take your ideas and create something that has never been done before (Or they should!)

Something now that couples are asking about is getting published in a magazine. Magazines won't just publish a wedding that was "expensive", they will specifically want to see original details. If the details aren't there, it's not worth sharing for them. (from the mouth of a well respected bridal mag editor).

These pictures are from Art Fool, another great ED firm. A few last pointers and insights about Event Designers.

Their job is to create something beautiful. They will charge for their concepts and time and bill for materials based on your budget or vision.

They generally aren't coordinators. They may partner with a day of coordinator if you think that is something you are looking for, but designers are different people than coordinators.

Please value their time as you would value a photographer's or a florist's time and understand that you aren't just paying for some linens and cute nick knacks.

Working with an Event Designer doesn't mean giving up all creative control either. Good ED's should partner with you! Find people you like and you can have fun with! We absolutely love everyone of our clients and are lucky enough to work with people we want to spend time with.

OK this is so great and awesome design. Note the large branch/tree type thing. The pear shaped bulbs actually charge on it and can be "plucked" from the tree, emitting light for up to 1 hour before they need to be put back on the tree/charger. Honestly, this would be very cool for an event, but more realistically, I just wanted to share it. I jus thought this would be too cool to keep to myself. The link to Nick Foley's site (the designer), isn't working but I will provide it anyway.

A Reader's Event

Not too long ago, we received a comment from a reader and she included a link to her wedding and to say we were impressed was an understatement. I have to say that the presentation of her wedding on her web page was just as beautiful as the event itself! Store Window Inspiration

This image comes from HouseMartin in a store window. This image sparked so many ideas in my head. I generally hate the "bird cage card cage" thing at a wedding. I think it's been done 1000 times and if someone really wants to steal your cards they can get in that little cage of yours anyway. But this idea could be fab. I'm picturing a corner or a table just filled with all different birdcages in various sizes and colors, filled with candles like this. This would be great for a shabby chic type wedding. I'm seeing some hanging from the ceiling and some on different levels on a table with them moving to the floor as well. This could be incredible for a placecard table. I already found a TON on ebay and craigslist for as cheap as 2-5 dollars!

DIY Inspiration

These are so pretty but to me, not worth the price ($50.00 for the set). But I think something like this serves as great inspiration for a DIY project. Simply purchase frosted votives and find your favorite paper to wrap around at different widths and levels. You'll have a surprisingly modern look! Last night Lyndsi and I had dinner with Photographer Laura Novak. Not only is she extremely talented (she was my wedding photog!) but she's a great person and so business savvy. Lyndsi and I were just in the Swarvoski store to return something fug. We thought all we would see were scary little pandas and turtles that go in glass cabinents but we found some very cool stuff. One of my favorite things was this headband. This picture isn't the best, but in person, it's stunning! The black is actually my favorite, and for a chic bride this would be a show stopper! I can just see this with a beehive do behind it. Such a chic alternative to a tiara, which pains me to even write that word. Check it out. You would be surprised at the cool stuff over there!

Loving modern

I've always admired the work of both the photographer and event designer featured in these photos (Jessie Claire and R. Jack Balthazar) Obviously you all know I adore this color palatte. Take a lok at the blog when you can. It's interesting to see the room and how it was transformed. If you look closely you can tell this was a very traditional ballroom, with the rugs and the whole thing. This becomes a challenge to work with such a modern look. But they used architectural details and lighting to mask a lot of that and the event is stunning. Love this! Enjoy.

I've been hard on florists lately with all my talk of lighting. So I stumbled upon this gem of a florist and had to feature them. I actually shouldn't even call them a florist. They are more of a landscape design company who also does floral work and even deals furniture and lighting. There work is something fantastic! It's something totally different and I love their use of greenery which is probably inspired from their roots in landscaping. Any inspiration that can help us all think outside of the box is great. I'm loving that pink palette. If it were a hamburger I would totally eat it. Ok maybe I'm just hungry since that didn't make any sense. Check out Big Red Sun (PS their web design is stellar)

I really love the contrast between nature and an elegant chandelier. I especially love multiple chandeliers! If you're close enough to your venue you can run wiring for electric ones. Or you can use candlelit ones as long as you are cautious of the flame. I found this great example through photographer Jasmine Star. Coincedentally I was also looking for chandeliers this morning on ebay for my home! I thought I'd share them as well. Take a look at these great ones! Bonus, use them in your home after your event!

Weekend inspiration

It's Saturday and the weather is just gorgeous. For the first time in a long time I can turn off my AC and open the windows. Having an itch for the outdoors, this inspiration arose. I am just dying for the gown/skirt top combo in this photo. This is what I dream for Lyndsi one day! It's so chic, so different and from there came this rustic outdoor inspiration board. Enjoy. Lyndsi and I met with another great bride last night. My favorite part of this job is hearing what inspires people and learning how people think about design. This bride made a great choice to incorporate something her and her fiance truly love into their design. I won't give it away, because it's truly unique and will eventually make for an unbelievable event that will be Martha worthy. But what is interesting is how her design choices evolved from cotton candy pink and roses, to preppy, navy, society. Bouncing ideas back and forth is always fun for us. I know this event will be amazing. Here is some of our initial inspiration for a look and feel. Colors will be vary somewhat, but you can get the idea. These images come from the Ralph Lauren site.

Buying and selling your event

Lately I've been working with a few budget brides who needed some help thinking outside of the box when it came to creating a beautiful wedding. That's what we are here for anyway! So often people get trapped by their vendors with rentals and flowers of what a wedding "should" be, or the right way to make a wedding look. Try thinking about your event in a new way...

Look at your wedding as a start to not just your lives as a married couple, but the start of creating your home together. So much money is spent on rentals that you return, and flowers which get tossed. I highly recommend creating an event with a look you love, that you can use in your home. For example, I am moving soon and we are buying our first house (yay!). I want our new home to have an eclectic feel with vintage pieces mixed with modern ones...see pics above from Domino. I would then want to create an event that maybe would mimic that style so I could purchase items I would use in my home one day. Or I could sell these things and potentially make a great amount of money back.

Utilize Craigslist and Ebay! Here are some Philadelphia Craigslist finds which I could see translating into a really amazing event in different ways. I see that screen behind a cake and those gates set up to lead to a ceremony. I could see those farm buckets overflowing with flowers and those dishes mixed with different patterns to give the whole event a non matchy feel. The possibilities are endless and you're buying things you can use again or hopefully sell down the road. Most of these prices are usually negotiable as well. Check them out!

Lyndsi and I met with an awesome couple last night. They have a great sense of personal style and are such fun people. We loved all of her inspiration. This photo reminded me of the look she is going for (I would maybe use a cleaner door) but the vintagey touches are what we loved. Antique white with touches of black. This photo is awesome and from Better Homes and Gardens (thank you anonymous!). Presentation really is everything and this cake is presented so well. I'm normally not really into very elaborate cakes, but I am into the elaborate set up of the cake and this one is superb. Enjoy.

Last night my husband and I had the privilege of being selected as a newlywed couple to be interviewed for the Wedding Podcast network. For those of you not sure what this is, I wasn't either! But it's very cool. This company interviews newlyweds, wedding vendors, magazine editors, and anyone who can provide an interesting perspective. They then create podcasts (downloadable interviews). I would have loved to have this resource when I was planning my own wedding. If I were at the gym, I would much rather listen to Martha tell me how to make programs than my Britney Spears CD again. Do you believe it? I remembered! This one actually isn't so very over the top where it looks like flower puke everywhere. But it's our friend Preston so it does fall into this category. I think it's interesting that he did the backdrop for the ceremony with negative space and used the forest print for the rest. This looks so magical with the lighting and the lanterns. This actually would not be that difficult to recreate on a budget. Simply find fabric in a print that you like and use piping. Enjoy your OTTT.

This is a very special real wedding. Although I have never met the bride, the bride's brother (pictured) grew up with Brett and they are very close. The bride and I have been emailing about wedding talk now for a few months so I was so excited to see her pics. They absolutely blew me away! Not only did she use orange (which you all know I'm obsessed with right now), but she used fabric draping behind her ceremony, and a beautiful blank white space to make everything pop. There were too many amazing details to post them all. Everything from the birdcage veil to square table settings just had me in awe. Not to mention this is some awesome photography. That Marilyn Manson's wedding would be so incredible?! Well I certainly didn't. But one thing I love is the unexpected. Thanks to a reader who recommended that we check this wedding out in Vogue. It's absolutely amazing. She changed dresses I think 4 times and wore a purple ballgown to the ceremony. This wedding evokes the feel of the spooky classy chic look we blogged about. Real Weddings

This is wedding number 2 that I was lucky enough to attend as a guest this weekend. The wedding was in Virginia and truly reflected the brides tastes and had a southern preppy feel. I found out that she was inspired by a Lilly Pulitzer look. She used color palettes and even a cute pineapple logo throughout to reflect that style. The wedding was set on a country club golf course...Lilly herself would have been proud. Some of my favorite details included the polka dot ties on the groomsmen and the gross grain ribbons she used on her table names and place card display. Amy put so much effort into this lovely wedding. Lots of love and congratulations Amy and Josh!

These I love so so so so much. I wanted to use these back in the day for my own wedding but the look was too modern for my event at the time. I can't tell you how stunning these look in person. They are so affordable and look amazing at an alter or above a table or just in a focal point corner of your venue. Bonus...you can reuse them in your home after the event or sell them and they will go like hot cakes, I promise. Check them out at CB2. Ok I know we're pushing it here. But if done right, this would be phenomenal. Lyndsi and I have wanted to do a "spooky classy" event forever. Picture tons of candles, vintage imagery, a 1920's feel, stone walls, dark linens, warmth, history and not a pumpkin or ghost to be found! There is a serious line that could be crossed turning this into a cheese fest halloween party. That is not the idea here. The idea is to work with the season and use it in a beautiful way. Has anyone ever been to Tequila's in Philadelphia? That's the feel I'm talking about. Subdued, Dia los Muertes feel. We couldn't even find the images to truly reflect the feel we are talking about because it really hasn't been done that often. And certainly not well. We will do it well. I promise you.

That is the statement I made to a few friends before sending them this picture you see above. They thought (and still think) I'm crazy. But I think this is just adorable and so simple. I saw this a few months back and it was featured again on Outblush today. I think this would be so great for a winter event or even a baby shower. You don't have to have gobs of sweater covered fruit, but maybe in a bowl have only one piece of fruit in this knit. I bet this would be easy to make as well! Check out the sweater for my apple.

If you know me, you know I'm not a very outdoorsy kinda gal. I like air conditioning and bug free environments. However, I love an outdoor wedding. I love organic nature inspired elements to the event as well. With the sun setting earlier, this inspiration board was inspired by the colors of the sunset. I would just adore a ceremony as the sun was setting, candlelit with the firey colors surrounding in florals, gowns and tables. It would be just lovely. This is so lovely. The mix of the hydrangea (hanging!!) with the vintage chandelier is just great. You all know I'm into hanging stuff right now. I love how it looks like pretty little puff balls in this gazebo. But I hope hope hope that these babies have a water source tied up there as well. Yep it's Over the Top Tuesday, where we feature an over the top event. Ok, so it's the first time and probably the last over the top tuesday, since I'm sure I'll forget. Anyway. Although genius, Preston Bailey originals can get out of control. The lighting and draping is beautiful but the tables are too much for my tastes. Did anyone see that new special on VH1 about over the top weddings? There was a couple that used Preston Bailey and their total wedding ended up costing 2 million dollars! Woooh!

Trashing the dress? Trashy.

We were just asked what we think about this new phenomenon of "trashing the dress". First of all let me just say that I hope this picture is a Photoshop miracle and not some crazy fireproof bride. Anyway, for those not familiar, "Trashing the dress" in something new that brides are doing, where they destroy their wedding dress after the wedding to obtain a cool picture. Here is my view:
I don't like it. I say there are 2 ways to go after the wedding. Go traditional, keep the dress, love the dress, stare at it, whatever. These are the people who want to hold on to that day forever and it serves as a memory. The other half who doesn't care about tradition, the people who would consider a photoshoot like this, I say to you, SELL your dress! Make some money back on that expensive purchase and make some other bride who can't afford brand new, very happy. I recommend Pre-Owned Wedding Dresses.

I completely agree with the post on WeddingBee from Mrs. Peppermint. There is no good symbolism that comes from trashing your dress. It seems like it would be something you may do if you found your husband making out with his secretary. But I can't see why you would do this just for a unique picture. Well that's my point of view. What do you all think?

Ever since we were little girls, most of us have been dreaming of that perfect wedding dress. We each have different ideas about what that may be, but no matter what you end up with, it has to be totally you. And although we tend to forget about it, as we are embroiled in an internal 'mermaid vs. a-line silhouette' debate, what you grooms and their groomsmen wear can totally add to the overall feel of your event. Sophisticated menswear can make a Saturday night glam event even more elegant. Maybe your event is a laid-back affair, where something both casual yet wedding appropriate would be best. Either way, menswear should not be forgotten. And just like recent bridesmaids trends, consider giving your groomsmen the option of finding something that is more 'them' (within your guidelines of course) with possibly the same tie or similar handkerchiefs. There are endless and interesting possibilities! Menswear can be really fun, just be open to new ideas and the males of the party can make a real statement too!

hint: Pleated pants are for older men, flat-front pants are a better choice for the young and modern guy...

I would amaze myself if I could really come up with a giant cupcake post every day.
I'm sure you've all seen at least one wedding with cupcakes instead of a cake. But it's always so sad where there is no "cutting of the cake". You can bake this at home and still have all the cute little cupcakes arranged around this. Now you can have your informality of a cupcake dessert with the tradition of the cutting of the cake. I love this idea. Also great for showers, or other events.

This lovely event comes from Brides.com. They featured the wedding of the neice of celebrity planner Colin Cowie. This was a destination wedding, which really makes the pops of hot color very appropriate. I love all the many many bunches of flowers. These are very inexpensive, but the mass quantity of them makes them look uber chic. Note that there are just tones here of a similar palette and not a set 1 or 2 colors for the event. They took a few colors close on the color wheel (pinks and oranges) and used the complement of green to give it more punch. Love it. Also love that font and paper.

For an affordable way to do these centerpieces on your own. Take a look at this product that reader Bethany sent me. This can make something elaborate very affordable!

For the most part, we dislike the idea of a theme for an event. Unless you are throwing a fun birthday party or something and you just LOVE Rainbow Bright. Here is an example of a theme event. Can you guess what the theme is? His name rhymes with Gary Fotter. This is a Preston Bailey original and he is a genius, no doubt. This is an example of where a theme is bordering too much. If this is the extent of the theme....great, beautiful, stunning. But if I saw one menu with a wizard on it or any owls anywhere, I would puke in my soup. However this is a lovely picture and I just love anything that floats over the table. Enjoy!

It's finally catching on. Jcrew has added a slew of new bridesmaid dresses and colors and for the fall they have included GRAY as a selection! I am so very happy. Here is a little inspiration. You are going to start to see gray events mixed with pops of color everywhere. As my fab graphic design friend Pat said, "gray is totally the new brown." Here is some inspiration. Well not shame really. I absolutely love beautiful ribbon. I used to think of ribbon for girls who loved unicorns, hearts, and rainbows and wore bows in their hair. Now I know better. You can use ribbon as a continuous element all throughout your event in a beautiful way. We have designed events where everything from the napkins to the cake to the dresses to the programs had the same ribbon in different sizes. It was a nice touch. Well here is the best of the best. Romantic Flowers (I know cheesey name) has the best ribbon around. I adore their double faced midori satin and they come in every color of the rainbow. They also come in a huge variety of sizes. Think big gown sashes to tiny favor ribbons. If you are having a winter wedding, they sell beautiful velvets as well. You really can tell the difference in their ribbons.

So a clean, modern bold wedding is my inspiration right now. I'm also sad to see summer go and I will be missing yellow. I put this together just to get some creative energy out. This really looks like a great event. I really get a feel for who these people are by looking at these pictures. I love their take on a photobooth (see her bio for details) I love the ceremony backlighting, I love the cardbox. But do you know what I love most of all? (This is how I know Lyndsi is rubbing off on me)..Her Fonts! I love on the cookie tags and her place cards she either found a friend with cool handwriting or used a handwriting sort of font. Cool Find

I think this is very cool for those of you planning an urban chic event. These are tall skinny vases that look as though they are just balancing on their own, when in reality there is a tiny magnet that goes underneath your linen, holding them upright. I would like these in a tighter grouping for a better look, but I think the effect would be great. Wouldn't take a whole lot of flowers either! And they are very affordable at 39 bucks for 5! Presentation is everything folks. I think that's why we're in business! I'm on a martha kick today. These favors are so simple...fruit and candy. But it's the presentation that makes them so great! Notice the trays in each example. The create a clean line for favors to sit in beautifully. I love the cherry example for a country wedding. They look fresh picked from the farm and I'm sure this was not expensive. The rock candy one is so cute too! I even found these mini pales at a great price (8 dollars for 12!).

Pretty Drinks

After viewing Something Old Something New's post on drinks, I was reminded of this lovely idea from Martha. I love at an outdoor event when there is immediately a water service upon arrival. This is a pretty way to fancy it up. All you do it take a glass bottle you'd like to fill with fruited water. Cut a milk jug's top off and place the bottle in the jug. Fill the jug only about an 1/8th full of water and float some fruit slices. Place the whole thing in the freezer until frozen. Then repeat with another layer of water and fruit until the whole thing is full. The fill and repeat is so all the fruit doesn't float to the top. When you're finished remove the jug from the bottle and wahlah! Beautiful water service for your guests. -Amanda

While perusing thrift stores this weekend for interesting AND cheap goodies to use at some upcoming events, I came across a whole slew of wonderful and beautiful glassware, vases, and bottles at the local Salvation Army. The most expensive one I found was a large jug for about 79 cents. Combine a few great finds like that, free water and some fruit, and you've got yourself one heck of a thrilling and thrifty event showpiece.-Lyndsi

Martha moment and a Real Wedding

This is one of my all time favorite events I have ever laid eyes on. Yes I know it's old news to those of you in the wedding world. But in re-publishing this (from Martha), I hope at least 1 reader gets inspired who hasn't seen it! This is a great great example of the 2 elements I preach about to make a wedidng great. 1) Making it personal and about you as a couple and 2) Having continuity and consistency.
This bride and groom are both teachers and met when they were very young so they used an elementary school theme throughout. The continuity comes through in everything from the report card invitations, to the apple place cards, to the school themed portraits.

I guarantee this wedding wasn't expensive either. Since they were teachers it looks like a lot of supplies were just borrowed from the school. Use your imagination, use your own lives as inspiration and have fun! There are no rules!

This is the last of my Mel Barlow installation. He really does a great job and I love his focus on detail. I love this event. It's rustic without trying too hard. It just fits in well with the surroundings. I love his white suit, those leaf place cards and her bouquet. I love everything about this really.

This is great. I love anything that is beautiful and not overdone. Imagine this....
Beautiful vintagey outdoor wedding with a long wall or even an indoor wedding with a long window pane. Line up gobs of these mason jars in different sizes and shapes and use one type and color of flower (pink peony in this example) and line the whole wall in them maybe even buy some of the very small ones and throw some votives in the mix as well. Oh I am picturing it and just loving it. I hope it looks as good in your head as it does in mine. Mason jars are easy to buy cheap in bulk too. Take a look at this site that I found. Venues and a Real Wedding

Lyndsi and I work out of Philadelphia, so this is a local post to all of you Tri State area girls. I can vividly remember about 10 years ago going on a Photography field trip with Lyndsi to this spot. Since then I've been back at least 5 times. I remember telling Lyndsi that one of us has to get married there one day. Well I'm married so that leaves Lyndsi! I can totally see her wedding here one day, even though she wants something a little different. This space is so incredible. It's just miles of open garden with huge sculptures all throughout. I'm guessing that is why it is called the Sculpture Gardens! This is in New Jersey and it's free on Sundays to tour around. I would love to do a wedding here for a client one day. It's just stunning. I hate when I do this. I find something cool, save it and forget where I found this. If this is your picture or you know where it is from, please let me know. I love that there are 2 tones of lighting at the same time for the event. The purple is for the dance floor. It's not recommended to use pin spotting on candle lit tables, but here it looks like they used gobo lighting which creates a really nice romantic effect. And I always love rectangular tables!

Remember the post we did earlier with the beautiful retro looking wallpaper? Here is another awesome use for it. I found this via Decor8's blog from a Martha posting and I had to give it the Event spin. There is a warning that no one is sure how these would hold up to long term heat with a lightbulb, but I think they are awesome by themselves. Imagine custom lanterns in the paper you are using throughout your wedding invites, menus, programs, etc? So great! Detailed instructions on making these babies here.

So I know I've been hoching left and right about cutting your floral budget and adding to lighting. Florists please don't hate me! I love flowers I do! But I wanted to give you some ways to do this. Something as simple as candles on a mirror or a colorful bucket filled with anything, does the trick. Here is a design tip. Pick one or two things (candles, pinecones, etc) you can get cheap and do it everywhere. It looks more streamlined and it's hard to go wrong. Now I see these two images above pictured with some blue and white lighting... and bam! professional grade event. These are from Martha's Real Simple.

If you are reading this blog you are most likely trying to look for design help, save money, etc. And you most likely don't have a designer working for you already.

That is why the number 1 thing you wish you had but couldn't afford is a Lighting designer!

Number 2 (breaks my heart) is an Event designer/Coordinator!

Just a few comments and a little advice. I would highly reccomend you take away from your floral budget, as low as it may be, to hire lighting. 100 roses could impact a few tables. a lighting wash changes your whole room. But you know how I feel :-) Example above courtesy of Kenny Pang

In regards to hiring an event designer: A good event designer should also function as a coordinator. What I mean is that a great event is great on the design side but also on the business side (budgets, timelines, contracts, etc). And by investing in a good designer/coordinator you should be saving money! This person should execute your vision for less money that you could on your own. Please consider hiring someone. It's good for our industry and it's great for you as long as you hire the right person/company. It shouldn't be considered a luxury. It should be a necessity for you to plan your event as efficiently and in the most cost effective way you can.

A new take on engraved

I am LOVING this. JUST LOVING this. I have to first credit one of my favorite fellow Philadelphia bloggers OhJoy! for this great find and I wanted to share with all of you. This is a new company in North Carolina called Oslo Press, custom designing invitations on thin slabs of wood. It looks just wonderful. I would love to get one of these in the mail. Imagine your rustic vineyard wedding or your backyard barn wedding with these! Above are some of my favorites. I really love the envelope too with the red design. Of course, they aren't cheap. But if you're spending the money anyway, these make quite the impact.

Bridesmaids with style

So you're about to pick the dress for your bridesmaids. You want them to look chic, stylish and beautiful. You also want them all in the same dress. OK. Done. But please, listen to me closely. Stop there. Don't force the shoes, don't force the hair, don't force the jewelry. 1) they are not robots 2) it won't look as stylish 3) they may not be your friends anymore after your wedding. People are afraid that if they don't insist on every detail and accessory, they won't look good. I'm here to show you how it can be done. One service SocialDesign offers is wardrobe styling. (Lyndsi was a menswear consultant for Neimans). But if you're doing it on your own. Give your girls a color range, pick one dress and let them have fun with the rest. Here I chose brown, red and gold. Everything is either from Jcrew or Forever21. Oh, those awesome shoe clips in the 2nd pic are from Absolutely Audrey. Cheap and good!

Real weddings

Destination weddings can be great for the easy going bride and not so great for someone who needs a little more control. That is unless you are paying a planner/designer to take a pre-trip to your destination. You're pretty much going to get what you get once you get there. I found this gorgeous wedding on the blog of the fab photog Mel Barlow. Gorgeous couple! What I love about this is how they used the sky as an accent color. I love how the chartreuse linens contrast with it. And I was wearing a chartreuse jacket the other day with a red bracelet and thought that this would be a great palette for an event! The cupcake showcase is awesome with that punch of red in there. I love the modern look of this beachy destination wedding.

Nothing is wrong with the before, it's just the transformation that makes this great. The guests know that it is now time to party. The space is absolutely transformed with the red wash of light.

Pot at your event

Thanks knot friends for the pic. Lyndsi and I did something similar for a client once and it was so awesome. She wanted something in between rustic and mansion/historic. We found a great deal on pots from ACmoore and got terracotta markers. This is so easy and so cute. It makes a table look really great and it's a green/functional favor. I really love placecards with escort cards. (One being the ones already placed at a table and the others being the ones guests pick up on the way to the tables). Seems redundant but it's a nice detail that makes tables look pulled together.

Exploring Ethereal

Sorry for the delay in postings today. What a busy weekend!

Lyndsi and I met with a bride this weekend who had really great inspiration. She also was collecting a book of images and I absolutely loved the aesthetic. She described her vision as "Anthropologie Ethereal". Which I just love. I haven't seen this look done well in a long time and I think it has such amazing potential. I picture the eclectic natural feeling of Anthropolgie mixes with empire waists and flowy fabrics. It can be really stunning! So I visited one of my fave blogs who really embodies that style to a T: Gypsy Purple. The images below are credit to her. This is someone of an inspiration or mood board for the aesthetic. So dreamy. Enjoy!

I'd like to leave you with something lovely for the weekend. Ok small critique...not a fan of the chair ribbons, too much. Othewise. The contrasting color palette is great. Love the runner.
